What is Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Horizontal directional drilling is a guided trenchless method of installing utilities and ducting beneath roads, watercourses, and environmentally sensitive areas. Consequently, this advanced solution eliminates the need for open-cut trenching. Additionally, in many cases, it removes the requirement for road closures. Taken together, these benefits make it an even more environmentally friendly and less disruptive alternative for your installation.

Project scoping and planning

From initial contact about your project, HDD Utilities will guide you through the entire process to bring your horizontal directional drilling project to completion. Throughout the planning phase, we offer expert advice on pre-planning, assessment of ground conditions, and the best methods and products to use. In addition to our core services, we provide full turnkey solutions, including assistance with any required permissions. To further support project accuracy and safety, we also arrange and provide utility mapping and ground penetrating radar scanning.

To begin, a site visit and survey will be arranged. Following this, any necessary follow-up meetings or additional information will be agreed upon prior to the commencement of planned works on site. In preparation for execution, all relevant certifications, risk and method statements, and required permissions will also be provided and confirmed before any site activity takes place.

Installation process

Once our team arrives on site to commence works, the drilling route will first be established. Before any drilling begins, trial holes or launch and receive pits will be excavated as required. Depending on project requirements and ground conditions, distances of up to 100m or more can be achieved using our compact drilling rig, with pipe diameters of up to 180mm installed.

Once the pilot bore is completed, the reaming and pipe installation will take place.

The drill head is tracked from above ground using a locating system with a drilling and tracking engineer working closely together to ensure all installations are completed in the safest manner.

Quality & Client Satisfaction

To ensure operational excellence, our directional drilling engineers are fully trained and qualified to operate our HDD machines. As part of our standard procedure, detailed reports will be produced showing the depths of any pipe work and ducts installed. Furthermore, we pride ourselves on making sure all client needs are met. Upon completion, all works will be signed off, and subsequently, follow-ups will be made to confirm client satisfaction.
